Ford Explorer ST Draws New Customers as Explorer Hits a New Milestone

The Ford Explorer ST continues to dominate the market, proving a growing need for performance SUVs. The 400 horsepower Explorer ST has not only surpassed sales expectations, but it’s also attracting new customers.

The successful Explorer ST has accounted for 21% of overall Explorer sales so far and is attracting first-time Ford buyers. In fact, nearly 28% of non-Ford trade-ins are coming from luxury brand owners. The Explorer ST’s impressive sales are helping the Explorer hold its title as America’s all-time best-selling SUV, according to a Ford analysis of new vehicle registration data from IHS Markit.

“Ford ST stands for performance for enthusiasts, and Explorer ST is no exception,” said Craig Patterson, Ford SUV marketing manager. “We believe once drivers feel the power and refinement of our first-ever Explorer ST, performance bred from racetracks around the world, demand will only grow stronger.”

The 2020 Explorer was built to impress with its rear-wheel drive powertrain and athletic build enabling a sportier grip of the road. The all-new Explorer also boasts an extra 600 pounds in maximum towing capacity when equipped with the Trailer Tow Package and the available 3.0L EcoBoost engine.

Not only is this the most powerful Explorer yet, but it also now offers more stylish features inside and out. Customers can now choose satin silver accents, among other options, for the instrument panel, steering wheel and switches. Ford is also adding a new XLT Sport Appearance Package this summer for the 2021 Explorer.

“Ford changed the game three decades ago with the civilized, all-purpose utility vehicle refined with easy-to-use electronic 4x4 controls and luxury packages like the Eddie Bauer edition,” said Patterson. “Families flocked to the new platform, leaving their boring minivans behind – and we’re seeing history repeat itself all over again.”

As the Ford Explorer celebrates its 30th anniversary, the 8- millionth Explorer was sold this January, making it the first SUV to hit the milestone. The Explorer redefined the sport utility segment in 1990 offering a vehicle with 4-doors, ample cargo space, and amazing 4x4 capability. Today, the Explorer is attracting first-time Ford buyers with its innovative performance SUV.
