As you unpack your winter boots, gloves and scarves, it’s also time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the change of seasons. Make sure you’re prepared this winter, and check out Carman Ford in New Castle’s tips below.

Perimeter Check

As temperatures begin to dramatically drop over night, your vehicle's tires will begin to lose pressure. Make sure to check your vehicle’s tire pressure once the temperature drops. This will prevent a flat tire or loss of traction due to low tire pressure.Tires typically lose 1 PSI per 10 degree Fahrenheit drop. For your vehicle’s correct PSI, check your owner’s manual.

As you’re filling your tires with air, check the tread level on your tires. If your tires are looking bald, you’ll want to replace them before the snow arrives. To keep better traction on snow and ice, you’ll want more tread on your tires. In fact, if you live in an area with a lot of hills where snow and ice are common during the winter months, you may want to invest in snow tires.

Finally, check your wiper blades. Do you remember when the last time was that you changed your wiper blades? Wiper blades should be routinely replaced once a year. If your wiper blades are no longer creating clear visibility for you while in use, replace them to prevent an accident.

Keep the Essentials Stocked

It’s time to dig out the ice scraper and keep it handy in your vehicle at all times. Other items to keep in your car during the winter include extra clothes, a blanket, ready-to-eat snacks and bottled water. You never know what each winter will bring, and it’s best to be over-prepared rather than needing in a bad situation.

In case your vehicle gets stuck, make sure you keep an abrasive substance on hand, such as cat litter, to gain traction when you’re stuck on snow or ice. Keep in mind that smartphone batteries don’t last forever, and you may end up stuck on or off the road. Keeping a flashlight and flares in your vehicle could also prove to be a necessity.
