The All-New Shelby GT500: More Powerful Than any Street-Legal Ford in History

With a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 pumping out more than 700 horsepower, the 2020 Shelby GT500 has the best Mustang track times ever. The Shelby GT500 is capable of going 0-60 mph in only around three seconds making it the quickest street-legal acceleration ever offered in a Mustang.

Ford president Jim Farley said, “Carroll was always working on the next faster Shelby, I think he would love this Mustang more than any other.” Farley is probably right, as the 2020 GT500 would likely give a thrill even to Carroll Shelby with it’s performance once reserved only for exotics.

To create the all new GT500, Ford Performance had to develop an exclusive powertrain capable of delivering the insane levels of power and torque. The supercar level powertrain makes the Mustang a new standard for American performance cars. Global director Hermann Salenbauch said, “As a Mustang it has to be attainable and punch above its weight.”

The Shelby GT500 is certainly punching above its weight with acceleration times rivaling the 2017 Ferrari GTC4 Lusso. This is possible because of the TREMEC® 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The transmission can shift smoothly is under 100 milliseconds; the dual-clutch transmission was inspired by the Ford GT supercar’s.

The Shelby GT500 has the looks to not only match its performance, but enhance it. The large angular grille openings and muscular hood combine for an aggressive, aerodynamic design inspired by modern fighter jets. “Every millimeter of the Shelby GT500’s fastback design is aimed at improving performance,” said Melvin Betancourt, Ford design manager.

The purpose-built cockpit stuns with race-inspired materials and high-quality finishes that are a parallel to the world-class power. Available Recaro racing seats hold drivers in place while behind the wheel of this wild horse, and have pass throughs for safety harnesses to insure comfort and security at highspeeds.

Carroll Shelby called the original Shelby GT500 “The first real car I’m really proud of.” Today, with the third-generation 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 that legacy of pride continues and powers the most advanced Mustang ever.
